What is the Uchinanchu Festival?

　日本有数の移民県である沖縄では、戦前戦後を通じ多くの県民が海外へ雄飛し、現在、北米・南米をはじめ世界各地に36万人を超える県系人が在住しています。その「世界のウチナーンチュ」（方言で“沖縄の人”のこと）が、5年に1度母県に集う、沖縄県ならではの感動イベントが「世界のウチナーンチュ大会」です。

Many Okinawans left their home prefecture to go overseas both before and after World War II, making Okinawa a prefecture in Japan with one of the largest emigrant populations. Today, there are more than 360,000 people of Okinawan descent in North and South America and throughout the world. These “World Uchinanchu” (Uchinanchu being the Okinawan word for Okinawan people) gather once every 5 years in their home prefecture of Okinawa at the “World Uchinanchu Festival”.

The History of the Worldwide Uchinanchu Festival up to the 4th Festival

　1世紀にも及ぶ移民の歴史の中で、多くの県系人たちは移住先における数々の困難を、不屈の精神と持ち前のおおらかさで乗り越えてきました。今では移住国社会の構成員として政治、経済、文化、学術等の各分野で活躍しながら、移住先国の開発・発展に寄与し、高い評価と信頼を得ています。

　沖縄県が誇る人的財産であるこれら海外県系人の世界的なネットワークを形成しようと1990年に開催されたのが「第1回世界のウチナーンチュ大会」でした。世界17ヶ国41地域から2,397人ものウチナーンチュが集まったこの大会では、何十年ぶりに故郷の地に降り立った1世、初めて母県の土を踏んだ2世、3世、そして彼らを温かく迎えた家族、親類などが抱擁を交わし合い、国境を越えて心を通いあわせた感動の大会となりました。

　その5年後には「第2回世界のウチナーンチュ大会」（1995年）を機に、経済交流の促進を目的とした県系人のビジネスネットワーク「WUB」（World Uchinanchu Business Association）が設立されました。第2回大会の参加者は3,922人を数え、2001年に開催された第3回大会では、直前に勃発した米国の同時多発テロにもかかわらず、4,325人の参加がありました。

　2006年10月12日から15日までの4日間、世界21ヶ国・3地域から4,937人のウチナーンチュが参加し行われた第4回世界のウチナーンチュ大会、沖縄に集い、出会い、絆や友情を育んだウチナーンチュの軌跡を綴りました。

Throughout the century-long history of Okinawan emigration,  emigrants from Okinawa prefecture and their descendants overcame difficulties and hardships through a combination of indomitable will and generosity of spirit. These people are now valuable contributors to the countries they have settled in, active in such diverse fields as politics, finance, culture and academia. They continue to gather acclaim and trust by contributing greatly to their countries’ development.
Recognizing emigrants and their descendants as an important human resource for the prefecture of Okinawa, an attempt to create a worldwide network for Okinawans overseas resulted in the 1st Worldwide Uchinanchu Festival, held in 1990. 2,397 Uchinanchu from 41 regions in 17 countries came together, bringing back Issei emigrants after decades of separation, and bringing Nisei and Sansei for the first time to their mother prefecture. They were able to reestablishing their roots in Okinawa and establishing bonds beyond borders through the warm welcome given by family and relations here.
5 years later, the World Uchinanchu Business Network (WUB) was established during the 2nd Worldwide Uchinanchu Festival in 1995, with the aim of developing financial relations between worldwide Uchinanchu. 3,922 worldwide Uchinanchu participated in the 2nd festival. The 3rd Worldwide Uchinanchu Festival in 2001 welcomed 4,325 participants, despite the tragic attack against the United States mere weeks before the festival.

In the 4 days between October 12 and 15, 2006, 4,937 worldwide Uchinanchus from 3 regions and 21 countries came together in the 4th Worldwide Uchinanchu Festival. They celebrated and nurtured their Uchinanchu identity through their meetings, friendship and shared heritage.
